The ASPEQ aviation theory exams, explained
Every New Zealand licence and rating, from PPL through CPL, ATPL and instrument ratings, requires CAA theory exams delivered by ASPEQ. Here is how they work and how to prepare, in plain English.
The licence pathway
ASPEQ administers the theory exams at every level. Pilot Prep starts with PPL, with the higher levels on the way.
Private Pilot Licence
Six core theory subjects. The foundation for every other licence.
Commercial Pilot Licence
Deeper theory across the same domains, to a commercial standard.
Instrument Rating
Instrument flight rules, procedures and approach theory.
Airline Transport Pilot Licence
The full airline-level theory pathway.
The PPL theory subjects
For the PPL, the syllabus is split into separate subjects, each examined on its own. You sit them one at a time and can space them across your training. Higher licences examine the same domains in greater depth.
Subject names and groupings are set by the CAA syllabus; confirm the current list for your licence with the CAA.
How the exams work
The exams are computer-based, multiple-choice, and sat at approved testing venues through ASPEQ. Each subject is examined separately, and you need to reach the CAA’s required pass mark for that subject and licence.
If you pass but get some questions wrong, you receive a Knowledge Deficiency Report (KDR) identifying the topics you were weak on. It is a useful guide for what to revise before your flight test.

Booking and sitting your exam
Book through ASPEQ
Exams are booked and sat at approved ASPEQ testing venues. Check available sittings near you.
Bring valid photo ID
You will need acceptable identification to sit. Confirm what counts on ASPEQ’s site.
Resits and timing
If you do not pass, you can resit after the required wait. Plan subjects around your flight training.
How to prepare and pass first time
Study the syllabus, not a question bank
ASPEQ rewords questions and uses close distractors. Understanding the topic is what reliably gets the mark.
Understand cause and effect
You should focus on learning why things happen and prepare an answer before reading the options. This is how to get the right answer, not just a good guess.
Practise under exam conditions
Do timed questions and read the explanation for every one, right or wrong.
Use your KDR to target revision
If you pass with gaps, the report shows weak areas. Revisit those before your flight test.
Prepare the way that actually works
Our PPL courses teach the understanding behind every answer, then drill it with explained practice questions. Higher licences are on the way.
