About this course

Take your PPL Meteorology knowledge into commercial IFR flying. Work through the physics behind the weather with real numbers, from ISA deviation and density altitude to cloud base and the stability of air lifted over terrain, then apply it to the hazards that matter in a twin at or below FL250.

Built around New Zealand's CPL Meteorology syllabus, Subject 20, this course widens the picture to the South Pacific and the tropics, with the general circulation, the ITCZ and SPCZ, trade winds and tropical cyclones alongside icing, turbulence, thunderstorms and mountain waves. You learn to read real New Zealand forecasts, charts and imagery for IFR planning. Interactive simulations, practice checkpoints and module reviews build the skills, and a full practice exam checks you are ready.

What you'll get

  • Subject 20 syllabus references throughout, with searchable topic codes
  • Worked calculations for ISA deviation, density altitude, cloud base and stability
  • South Pacific and tropical weather, from the ITCZ and SPCZ to tropical cyclones
  • Interactive simulations of mountain waves, jet streams, fronts and weather charts
  • Real New Zealand forecasts, SIGWX charts and imagery decoded for IFR planning
  • Practice checkpoints, module review quizzes and a full practice exam

Before you start

  • Recommended: PPL Meteorology knowledge or equivalent familiarity with aviation weather.
  • Basic familiarity with IFR operations, flight levels and altimeter settings.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this course for?

Pilots progressing from PPL to CPL and studying New Zealand's Subject 20 Meteorology syllabus. It also suits pilots preparing for IFR flying who want a deeper grounding in aviation weather.

How does it differ from PPL Meteorology?

It goes deeper into the mechanisms with real numbers and calculations, widens the scope to the South Pacific and the tropics, and frames the weather around a twin flying IFR at or below FL250.

What is included?

Structured lessons, interactive simulations, diagrams, practice checkpoints, module review quizzes, a syllabus checklist and a full practice exam.

Can I study at my own pace?

Yes. Work through the modules in order, revisit difficult topics and use the module reviews to check your progress before the practice exam.

Does it cover the weather products I will use?

Yes. A full module decodes the current New Zealand products, including METAR, TAF, GRAFOR, SIGMET, SIGWX charts and wind and temperature charts, and applies them to flight planning.

Will it prepare me for the CPL Meteorology exam?

The course covers every item in the Subject 20 syllabus and finishes with a practice exam pitched at the CPL standard. Check the current exam details on the Aspeq booking page before you book.
