👋 Welcome to Comms Confidence: Phonetic Alphabet

This short demo course helps you build recognition + recall of the phonetic alphabet, while also showing you how PilotPrep lessons, tools, and quizzes work. You don’t need any aviation knowledge, just curiosity.

Picture this: a busy controlled aerodrome. Two aircraft on frequency, one is BVS, the other is BBS. The pilot of BBS hears "B V S cleared for takeoff" but the V comes through the static sounding a lot like a B.

He starts his roll. So does BVS. Who was actually cleared?

This is not a hypothetical. It's why pilots, controllers, sailors, soldiers, and 111 operators don't spell with the alphabet you learned in school. They use NATO phonetic: 26 words chosen specifically because they don't sound like each other, even through a bad radio.

In the next 10 minutes you'll learn the whole set, practise it the way real pilots do, and walk out using it like you've been on the radio for years.

What you'll build

You don't need any aviation background. Just curiosity and a willingness to say a few funny words out loud.

Next up

The alphabet, split into bite-sized chunks so you're not staring at a wall of 26 words.
