E6-B Flight Computer Trainer
The ASA E6-B on screen, with guided moves, practice problems that get harder as you get them right, and a twelve-question quiz. Built for New Zealand PPL and CPL navigation theory.
E6-B flight computer
60 index under 12.0 · 12.0 per hour is 2.00 per minute
Guided moves
Pick a move to learn it step by step on this dial.
Seven moves, in order
Each one is a short guided tutorial on the dial, then a practice set that gets harder as you get them right first time. The early moves underpin the later ones.
- 1Slide rule
Multiply and divide
The 10 index turns the dial into a ratio machine.
- 2Slide rule
Time, speed and distance
Rate over the 60 index, then read the dial either way.
- 3Slide rule
Fuel burn and endurance
Litres per hour over the 60 index, exactly like knots.
- 4Slide rule
Unit conversions
The printed arrows: align once, read every unit.
- 5Slide rule
TAS and density altitude
Pressure altitude from QNH, then one window for TAS and DA.
- 6Wind side
Wind: heading and ground speed
Draw the forecast wind, then read the wind correction, heading and GS off the card.
- 7Wind side
Wind: finding the wind in flight
Run the triangle backwards and measure the real wind.
Use it in the course
The same trainer sits inside the PPL Navigation course
Chapter 9 puts one move per lesson beside the theory it comes from, with the questions that follow: CAS to TAS, proportion, time, speed and distance, climb and descent, fuel and conversions. Chapter 10 works the wind side, and the fuel planning chapter runs the burns and endurance again on real legs.
What the trainer covers
Time, speed and distance
Set your ground speed over the 60 index once and every distance on the outer scale sits opposite its time on the inner. The same move answers climb and descent questions with feet per minute.
Learn thisFuel burn and endurance
Fuel flow in litres per hour is just another rate, so it works exactly like a ground speed. Read leg burns above the minutes and endurance under the usable fuel.
Learn thisUnit conversions
The printed arrows convert nautical miles, statute miles and kilometres, and litres, gallons and fuel weights, all with one alignment. Put the value you have under its arrow and read every other unit at once.
Learn thisTAS and density altitude
Set outside air temperature against pressure altitude in the airspeed window and the main dial converts every calibrated airspeed to true airspeed. The density altitude aperture reads the figure performance charts want.
Learn thisThe wind side
Draw the forecast wind as a dot, rotate the ring to your track and slide to your TAS: ground speed under the grommet, drift under the dot. Run it backwards in flight to measure the real wind.
Learn thisFrequently asked questions
Is this the same as a real ASA E6-B?
The artwork and the scale geometry match the ASA flight computer used in New Zealand flight training, so every move you learn here transfers directly to the plastic one in your nav bag. The only additions are digital: guided moves, highlights, a reading pointer and a caption that reads the dial in words.
Do I need an account?
No. The simulator, the guided moves, the practice sets and the quiz are free in the browser. Your progress is stored on your device, so it is there when you come back on the same phone or computer.
Which exams does this help with?
E6-B skills are examined in PPL and CPL Navigation and General Navigation theory, and the same calculations run through Flight Planning. The practice problems use the value ranges you will see on a New Zealand flight plan, and the tolerances match what the plastic instrument can genuinely read.
Phone or computer?
Both work. On a phone the dial fills the width and the controls stay pinned under it while you scroll. On a wider screen the whole instrument and the lesson panel fit on one screen, so nothing needs scrolling to read the bottom of the dial.
